The X8 is an old phone now, and is available quite cheaply. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 looks a lot like the X10 Mini and has similar specs and a similar price. But by increasing the size and resolution of the screen it becomes a lot more usable. The user interface is the same though, and feels dated compared with Android phones from HTC or Samsung. Originally running Android 1.6, it's now been updated to version 2.1, but still lags behind rival phones running 2.3. The custom firmware from Sony Ericsson and O2 also doesn't seem to help with reliability, with some users reporting freezing and crashing. All the other features seem to have been retained however. Connectivity is good, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The media player is excellent and there's an FM radio with RDS too. aGPS is here, with full support for Google Maps (including Street View) and geo-tagging of photos. A demo version of WisePilot Turn-by-Turn navigation software is included. The built-in memory of 128MB isn't bad to start with, and you can add microSD memory cards of up to 16GB. A 2GB card is included in the sales package. Web browsing is better on the X8 than on the X10 Mini, although it isn't the best, involving clicking zoom buttons, as there's no pinch-to-zoom capability. There's no Flash support either, although on the positive side YouTube videos are fully supported via a dedicated app. The processor is a 600 MHz Qualcomm CPU, the same as used in the X10 Mini, and it's adequate for the type of device. We're relieved to see that the battery power has been boosted significantly compared with the X10 Mini, and battery life isn't a major issue with theX8, although it isn't the best around.

Latest Announcement Sony Xperia Neo L GSM Smartphone Reviews and Deals

Today Sony Mobile announced a new addition to its Xperia smartphone line-up. The Sony neo L is a mid-range device that is based on the neo V and is destined for the Chinese market. The Xperia neo L will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich at launch (a first for Sony) and can easily be confused with the neo V as they share similar looks and specifications. However, the neo L also borrows a few design elements from the Xperia PLAY, sans the PlayStation certified joypad.

The handset, which is currently slated for a release in China, carries a 1GHz single-core Snapdragon CPU, 512MB of RAM, and a 4-inch display at 800×480. Also included is 1GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD) and a 5MP camera, but the neo L misses out on NFC support. It measures in at a plump 12.2mm and sports a 1500mAh battery. You’ll also find a front facing VGA camera on the front of the device. 1GB of storage is onboard, although there’s a microSD card slot so you can expand that up to 32GB. At the back, the Xperia neo L carriers a 5MP snapper capable of shooting 720p videos, while a VGA front-facing camera enables video calling. At 120.0 x 61.0 x 12.8mm, the neo L is slightly longer, but slimmer than the neo V.

Here are some hands-on photos of the neo L courtesy of Sina to help you see how the device really looks. Sony stays mum on pricing and time of availability of the neo L, but it has been revealed that the Chinese market will get it first. Whether it'll be also the last is anyone's guess for now.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 is sequel to the popular, albeit mind-bendingly expensive, Xperia X1, which was released by Sony Ericsson in 2008. After a strong caveat that what we're looking at is preproduction software, aSony Ericsson rep admitted that Windows Mobile 6.5 isn't all it could be -- though we're unsure why Sony Ericsson didn't throw a bit more hardware at the problem, the floating Sony Ericsson home screen seemed to excuse any of the UI lag it introduces. Again, early software, but the X1 didn't exactly rise above its preproduction jankiness. The X2 a will feature 850 MHz 3G, fully suited for AT&T, Rogers, and most other North American carriers. However, you'll also pay a few hundred bucks more for the privilege. Since this is the only difference between the X2i? and the X2a, I'll be addressing them collectively as the X2 for the duration.
