The HTC EXPLORER made its official entrance into the world today as the company's most affordable SMARTPHONE to date. Unfortunately, we don't know exactly how affordable, since the company did not disclose the price. The entry-level HTC EXPLORER offers a 3.2-inch HVGA touch screen, a 600MHz processor, and a 3-megapixel camera. The Gingerbread device also features HTC'S SENSE user experience, with a revamped home screen similar to the one shown on the HTC RHYME. Other specs include Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, USB tethering, 512MB RAM, and 512MB internal storage. The user experience on the HTC EXPLORER, however, is impressive. The HTC SENSE user interface is in-built, which has long been the best of the manufacturer-specific custom variants of ANDROID. It runs version 3.5a of Sense -- the same as in the Rhythm, which HTC describes as having been "decluttered" from previous versions. Customer feedback, apparently, was that people like to actually be able to see their wallpaper -- rather than just a grid of icons. The Android version is Gingerbread 2.3.5. Using the device, it's clear that HTC'S taken this "simplification" principle to heart. Most of the HTC APPS, including the Mail app, have had non-critical information stripped out of the default view, though they can be easily re-enabled in the settings.
